Being Everything to Everybody

stressed woman, holding head and screaming

Many of my clients and friends are truly everything to everybody . . . and they are truly miserable. They are the perfect wives, the perfect mothers, the go-to women at work, adoring daughters, and the always-available friend. They are also completely pissed off, resentful, and bordering on walking away from […]

The Star Trek Theory

My husband loves Star Trek. I don’t. He really enjoyed the television shows and he likes to see the movies as they come out. I don’t. Last weekend my husband invited me to dinner and the new Star Trek movie.

When Everything Seems to be Going Wrong, Here’s the FIRST Thing You Should Do

Clients and friends tell me all the time about things that go awry in their lives and those moments in which everything seems to be going wrong. I ask them what they do in those moments and their answers vary, but more often than not they tell me that they just keep going.

The Relationship Litmus Test

I spend a great deal of time talking to friends and clients about their relationships. Sometimes it’s love, work, or family relationships, but often the discussion revolves around my client’s unhappiness with the relationship.

I spend a great deal of time talking to friends and clients about their relationships. Sometimes it’s love, work, or family relationships, but often the discussion revolves around my client’s unhappiness with the relationship. They tell me that they tolerate cruel words, being ignored, mind games, and other miserable behavior. As […]

Faith

“What if my relationship ends?” “What if my kids fail?” “What if I don’t get that job?” “What if I make a mistake?” “What if?” “What if?” “What if?” These are words that I hear from clients almost every single day.

“What if my relationship ends?” “What if my kids fail?” “What if I don’t get that job?” “What if I make a mistake?” “What if?” “What if?” “What if?” These are words that I hear from clients almost every single day. They are understandable words. They are normal thoughts. They are […]

The Perfect Family

As summer was winding down and two of my children were about to fly the nest, my husband set our camera up and got this shot of our family.

I immediately posted the picture on Facebook and Instagram.  Friends and family members complimented the photo and kept marveling at how perfect […]

The Fourteen-Year Pain Lesson

I left that physical therapy session feeling really embarrassed and somewhat ashamed of myself. Most of my time is spent guiding women into lives of power, happiness, and self care and here I was having spent fourteen years in a sufficient amount of pain.

A few weeks ago, I started working with a physical therapist. Here’s how our first conversation went:

Her: “I see you are here because your back is bothering you. Have you ever been to physical therapy before?”

Me: “No.”

Her: “How long have you been in pain due to your back?”

[…]

When the Kids Leave, Who Are We?

I will be in a car heading to a college where I will leave my only daughter to start her adult life without me. I am equal parts miserable and giddy with excitement.

As you read this, I will be in a car heading to a college in the middle of Pennsylvania where I will leave my only daughter to start her adult life without me. I am equal parts miserable and giddy with excitement. The misery is about me and the sadness I […]

Looking for Passion in all the Wrong Places

As a life coach and a mom of three budding adults, I hear and use the word passion quite a bit. “Find your passion in life and you will be happy.”

Getting Unconscious – Is It Worth It?

If you ask me what my greatest skill is, it’s avoidance or getting unconscious or sticking my head in the sand. I’m a star at it. I developed the skill as a young girl when I didn’t like what was going on in my world.
